The Local Committee of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-bc) in Arrecife urges the City Council of the capital to exercise public management based on clarity, transparency, and responsibility, in contrast to the improvisation and waste that are marking the actions of the current governing coalition of Coalición Canaria (CC) and Partido Popular (PP).
Canaristas particularly denounce the deficient planning of the Arrecife Carnival 2026, a central event for the cultural and social identity of the municipality. "It is incomprehensible that, given that this is one of the most important cultural events in the city, the City Council acts with slowness, disorganization, and lack of foresight, while demonstrating surprising speed in promoting other sporadic events, lacking cultural roots and true general interest."
From NC-bc, we want to recognize and highlight the tireless work of carnival groups, such as murgas, comparsas, and floats, who year after year sustain this festival with effort, creativity, and commitment, often without adequate institutional support. It is they who keep the carnival alive, despite the neglect of the municipal administration.
The progressive party also warns of the serious economic situation of the Arrecife City Council, which is dangerously heading towards bankruptcy and budgetary imbalance, as indicated by the municipal audit itself in its reports. This situation is a direct consequence of poor economic management, based on superfluous expenses and irresponsible decisions that are being investigated by the prosecutor's office.
They thus point to CC as primarily responsible for the disastrous management of the carnival, as well as for its collaboration with the PP in a policy of squandering millions of euros on unnecessary performances, while the municipality continues to lack essential basic services for citizens such as parks, cleaning, mobility, a rainwater plan and adaptation to climate change, or the Argana Alta health center, in addition to an unprecedented housing crisis.
“Arrecife needs a government that prioritizes what's important, that cares for its culture, respects public money, and guarantees dignified services for its residents,” emphasize NC-bc, reiterating their commitment to a fairer, more transparent, and well-managed city.
