The Local Committee of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) in Arrecife has demanded this Thursday political and technical responsibilities after the new rupture of a pipe in Argana Alta, this time of sewage, which caused the flooding of the public highway and the entry of wastewater into several homes in the neighborhood, generating a serious situation of sanitary risk and enormous damage to the affected families.
The Canarian formation considers that this new episode "cannot be described as an isolated incident", but rather that it "evidences the deterioration of infrastructures that have been suffering continuous breakdowns for years without the Arrecife City Council or the competent administrations being able to offer a definitive solution".
The spokesperson for NC-BC in Arrecife, Sheila Guillén, stated that "what happened in Argana Alta is unacceptable. We are not only talking about a pipe bursting, but about a public infrastructure that fails again, endangering the health of the residents and causing damage to their homes. Someone must take responsibility for this chain of breakdowns that repeats itself over and over again".
Guillén recalled that pipe ruptures in Argana Alta have become a constant in recent years, affecting both the supply network and the sanitation system, "without any comprehensive action to guarantee the safety and correct functioning of essential facilities for the citizens".
"The policy of acting only when the pipe has already burst demonstrates an absolute lack of planning. The neighbors cannot continue living with the uncertainty of not knowing when another breakdown will occur that affects their homes, their streets, or their quality of life," she added.
From NC-BC they consider it "especially serious that the sewage reached private homes, even forcing the intervention of the Security and Emergency Consortium and the Local Police to assist the affected people and guarantee the safety of the area".
Therefore, the formation demands a public appearance of the government group of PP and CC to explain the causes of this new rupture, the planned actions to definitively repair the network, and the responsibilities derived from events that, in Sheila Guillén's opinion, "must be attributed to incompetence in public management".
Likewise, NC-BC requests the urgent preparation of an independent technical audit on the state of the entire sanitation and supply network of Arrecife, with special attention to Argana Alta, as well as the planning of the necessary investments to replace those infrastructures that have reached the end of their useful life.
“The residents of Argana Alta deserve to live with peace of mind and have decent public services. They cannot continue to pay the consequences of years of neglect, lack of maintenance, and improvisation. It is time to stop patching and start solving the problems at their root,” concluded Sheila Guillén.
