The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Councilor for Equality, Myriam Barros, was present at the III World Conference of Grassroots Women that was held in Tunisia between September 3 and 9.
According to the Island Corporation, Barros was "the delegate from Spain" at these conferences, in which women from 42 countries in the Middle East, Africa and Europe debated the situation of women worldwide.
“Lanzarote was invited for being a migratory territory for many women who live in those countries and, during the conference, through different workshops, we had the opportunity to expose the real situation in which these women find themselves when they arrive on our coasts,” explained the Councilor for Equality, who defended "the importance of working at the source to tackle the causes of immigration."
According to Myriam Barros, the conference also served to underline that “Spain is at the forefront of feminist laws, in protecting women, far above other European countries.” “I believe that we are leading the fourth feminist wave and this was evident during these conferences,” adds Barros.
“In addition, we have managed to nominate Lanzarote to host the IV World Conference of Grassroots Women that will be held in five years, which I hope will become a reality,” says the Councilor for Equality of the Island Council, who was also appointed as European coordinator of these conferences.
