The San Bartolomé City Council has promoted the creation of a new mural for equality at the IES San Bartolomé, following what happened with the last one drawn in the area of the municipal sports center during the Pride Day celebrations last June.
The new work has been created by the same artist, Iván T., and on this occasion has also had the active participation of the institute's students, who have been involved in the creative process and the creation of the mural.
The initiative seeks for the students not only to be spectators of the intervention, but also to feel the mural as their own, participating directly in its creation and making it an element integrated into their educational and daily environment, as well as reinforcing LGTBIQ+ public policies with awareness campaigns, education in diversity, and resources to advance in real equality.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, highlights that “when we talk about equality, it is fundamental that the messages are also present in the spaces where our young people study, live together, and grow up”. In this regard, he points out that “the participation of the students in the creation of this mural adds value, because we are not only placing a work in an educational center, but we are making those who are part of it participate in its creation and feel it as their own”.
Pérez adds that “the City Council will continue to promote initiatives that allow the values of equality, respect, and coexistence to be transferred to the different spaces of the municipality, also using art and creativity as tools to generate awareness”.
For her part, the Councilor for Equality, Mónica de León, values the participation of the students and points out that “we wanted this new mural to be more than just an artistic intervention. We wanted the students to be able to be part of the process, contribute, and recognize in it a message that also represents them”.
De León highlights that “working on equality among the younger generations is fundamental to building relationships based on respect and coexistence” and considers that “bringing these messages to educational centers and doing so in a participatory and close way allows us to reach the students in a different way”.
The councilor also recalls that the intervention continues the mural previously carried out in the sports center area, which was later defaced and deteriorated, and that “we are not going to take a step back in the face of hate crimes and delinquency like the one that occurred with the previous mural,” she emphasizes.
In addition, the City Council recalls that in October, affective-sexual talks with a gender perspective will resume for all courses at IES San Bartolomé and IES Playa Honda to continue the commitment to equality policies.
The City Council has opted to transfer this new initiative to the educational environment, once again counting on the same artist and the direct involvement of young people.
With this action, the San Bartolomé City Council continues to use urban art as a tool for awareness and promotion of equality, while fostering the participation of the educational community in initiatives that are part of the public and collective spaces of the municipality.
