The first advance of participation in this Sunday's elections in Lanzarote leaves very low figures compared to five years ago. According to data released by the Ministry of the Interior, 14.77% of registered voters on the island had voted during the morning, compared to 21.25% who had done so by the same time in the May 2019 elections.
By municipalities, the earliest was San Bartolomé, where more than 17% of the census voted in the first hours, followed by Arrecife, which exceeded 14%. Then, in that order, are Yaiza, Tías, Teguise and Haría with participation percentages between 12 and 16 percent. Finally, at the bottom in participation in the first hours of the election day is Tinajo, with only 15%.
Catalina Tejera, the second from the right
In these elections we have seen Catalina Tejera, a resident of Tinajo, again. At 96 years old, she has never stopped exercising her right to vote. "It cost us enough to be able to vote, to now stay at home," she said.
In the Canary Islands as a whole, participation is at just over 18%, which is almost three points more than in Lanzarote. And throughout Spain, participation is much higher than in the islands since the polling stations have opened one hour more, in this case it exceeds 28%.
