The Governing Council of the Cabildo has approved the modification of the contract signed in its day with the successful bidder responsible for the island's comprehensive waste treatment service, in order to adjust the provision to environmental specifications, provide a solution to deficiencies and improve the processes of certain waste, improvements pursued by the Institution presided over by María Dolores Corujo.

This modification of the contract signed in 2014 between the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the company Vertederos de Residuos S.A., now Tratamiento Integral de Residuos Zonzamas S.A., amounts to 12,192,902.90 euros, plus 853,503.21 in respect of IGIC. The aim is to adjust the provision of this important service to the technical, environmental, urban planning and safety specifications approved after the award of the contract.

To this end, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Waste Area, will assume the new additional operating costs of the concession for the effective improvement of the environmental complex, placing the total investment at 6,760,900.65 euros during the remaining years of the contract. A few weeks ago, the Plenary of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved the modification of credit that will be allocated entirely to this modernization of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex.

President María Dolores Corujo recalled that the last intervention in Zonzamas dates back to 2017, when the works on landfill cell number 1 were completed. The highest island official also stated that this new investment will serve "to remedy important shortcomings; and also to adapt to the requirements of the Integrated Environmental Authorization". One of these interventions has to do with reducing the emission of light waste (plastic bags, etc.) from the complex itself to the outside, according to Corujo.

On the other hand, the president highlighted the importance of the good relations with the successful bidder in this adaptation process, "something that will allow us to put an end to the requirements that the European Union and the Government of the Canary Islands have been making for years; and to make Zonzamas a more effective and efficient plant on the ecosystem and more respectful from an energy perspective. These issues are part of the social and environmental commitment of the current Government group of this Cabildo", notes María Dolores Corujo.

Some of the improvements they introduce

The Minister of Waste, Hugo Delgado, specified that this modification of the contract, after being approved yesterday by the Governing Council, must now be signed with the successful bidder, which issued a report of conformity to the proposal a few weeks ago.

The action of the Lanzarote Cabildo will accommodate actions in the treatment line of the classification plant in order to increase its capacity. The construction of a rainwater pond and the improvement of the leachate storage system by replacing the existing pond. The works necessary for the adaptation of the reception and storage area of WEEE and metallic waste of the CAZ.

In addition, equipment such as a bulky waste shredder and cubic box containers will be acquired, according to the head of the Waste Area.
