The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved this Monday the signing of a collaboration agreement with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands for the renovation and construction of a total of 100 places in residential, non-residential and day centers on the island.
This project, framed in the program "Equipment for person-centered care", has a financing of 9,223,818.87 euros from the European funds "Next Generation EU", through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
The objective of this agreement is to adapt Lanzarote's social and healthcare infrastructures to the new models of care for the elderly and dependent people, improving the quality of the services offered and reinforcing the island's care capacity in a context of growing demand for care resources.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, underlines the strategic importance of this agreement to improve care for the most vulnerable sectors of the island's population. "This agreement will allow us to make a qualitative leap in the care we provide to our elderly and dependent people. With this investment of more than 9 million euros, we not only reinforce the capacity of our centers, but also prepare them to face the challenges of the future with a more modern and person-centered approach," declares Betancort.
Likewise, Betancort emphasizes that this action is aligned with the Cabildo's policy of promoting a welfare state that guarantees the dignity and well-being of its citizens. "Our priority is to offer first-class social and healthcare services, and with this investment we will respond to a demand that has been increasing in recent years," he says.
For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, highlights the impact that this agreement will have on the island's social and healthcare network. "This is a fundamental step to advance in improving the living conditions of our elderly and people with disabilities. We are not only expanding the number of places available, but also adapting the centers to the new quality standards, which guarantees a closer, more dignified and respectful care with the individual needs of each person," says Acuña.
The counselor also points out that this type of agreements are essential so that Lanzarote can continue to advance in the improvement of long-term care, in line with the principles of inclusion and integral support included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
Improvements in key centers of Tías, Tinajo and Arrecife
The agreement contemplates the construction and renovation of places in three municipalities of the island. In Tías, 35 residential places and 20 day care places will be enabled in the multipurpose center for people with disabilities. For its part, in Tinajo, 20 day care places for the elderly and people with physical disabilities in a situation of dependency will be renovated.
Finally, in Arrecife, the agreement includes the construction of 15 residential places and 10 day care places in a multipurpose disability center.
A care model based on dignity and personalization
The new care model promoted by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, with the support of the Government of the Canary Islands and the financing of European funds, is based on the Comprehensive Person-Centered Care (AICP). This approach seeks to offer care adapted to individual needs, promoting the autonomy and dignity of the elderly and dependent people.
With the modernization of the facilities and the creation of new places, it is expected not only to improve the physical conditions of the centers, but also to offer a more personalized and higher quality care.
The agreement is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the care economy in the Canary Islands, contributing to the social welfare and inclusion of the most vulnerable groups.
