Marcos Bergaz Wins Teguise Elections

The PSOE candidacy for the mayoralty of Teguise, led by Marcos Bergaz, has obtained 31.78% of the votes and 8 councilors in the elections, while Coalición Canaria came in second place with seven councilors and 27.86% of the votes.

"I am very happy, the people of Teguise and La Graciosa have opted for change and for the socialist party to regain the leadership of that great municipality," Bergaz said in his statements to the press after the results were known.

The winner of the elections in Teguise has highlighted the work of his team for having "achieved what seemed impossible, to overthrow Coalición Canaria in Teguise, a fiefdom under the nationalist-insular government for 40 years. And we have done it with a rigorous, constructive opposition but also forceful in criticism. With enthusiasm, desire and serious work we have gone from three councilors to being the first political force in Teguise."

Coalición Canaria has lost the absolute majority in Teguise after 14 years of uninterrupted government. The departure of the current mayor Oswaldo Betancort and the commitment to the candidate Olivia Duque has resulted in a loss of four councilors.

Duque reveals that succeeding Betancort was "a difficult challenge", but that she decided to accept it "knowing the risk involved. Within the results we expected a drop due to the departure of Oswaldo Betancort," she assures in statements to La Voz.

"We have to continue working with the panorama that remains. That is democracy," she adds.

"We come from a change and the bets for change also have their risks," the nationalist Marci Acuña revealed to La Voz with the first votes counted.

With 100% of the votes counted, the nationalist party obtained 2,471 or what is the same, 27.86% of the votes. CC loses the first political force and moves to the second position. After her, the candidacy of the Popular Party with Rita Hernández has won a councilor and is placed with three councilors.

The third party with the most representation has been the PP, with 12.36% of the votes has obtained three councilors, one more than in the previous elections. Nueva Canarias with 7.07% of the votes obtains a councilor, PTG has also achieved it with 6.81% of the ballots.

Vox also enters the Teguise town hall after obtaining just over 5.09% of the votes.
