The socialist senator for Lanzarote and La Graciosa and Fourth Clerk of the Senate, Francisco Manuel Fajardo, has traveled to Brussels with a delegation from the Senate, to attend on the 29th and 30th the second edition of the EU Parliamentary Democracy Forum organized by the European Parliament. The meeting brought together European and national parliamentarians, civil society, and experts

During the Forum, the senator also had the opportunity to participate in a meeting convened by the S&D Group that brought together progressive European parliamentarians, to hold a debate on the fight against democratic backsliding, the response to the threat that extremist forces pose to democracy, and the fight against disinformation.

Within the framework of the pre-forum session, focused on the European Democracy Shield, Fajardo defended education in democratic values against the phenomena of hoaxes, dehumanization, hate speech, and targeting, as forms of violence under the guise of a supposed right to freedom of expression and information, even under anonymity that bypasses the right to receive truthful information, thus becoming a deterrent to active participation in politics.

He analyzed the role of the media and social networks regarding these issues and indicated that the dangers are not only external, but that political parties are also responsible, since silence in the face of these situations of violence implies inadmissible complicity, recalling that hate generates more hate and this ends up generating totally negative effects for any democratic system, so we must all condemn acts of violence wherever they come from.

His intervention concluded by stating that "it is not just about protecting the normal development of the work of citizens' representatives, but about defending the very essence of democracy, because politicians should be the first to set an example."

Among other topics addressed during the conference, highlights included institutional resilience, citizen participation, intergenerational representation, and interparliamentary cooperation, emphasizing the value of parliamentary diplomacy in resolving conflicts, defending human rights, and coordinating European policy in difficult times
