Coalición Canaria (CC) Yaiza assures that the mayor, Óscar Noda, "lied" by stating that the City Council was unaware of the decision by the Spanish Government's Coastal Demarcation to demolish the historic staircase of Playa de Abajo, in El Golfo.
The nationalist party bases this accusation on documentation provided by the City Council itself in response to a request filed by its local secretary and municipal spokesperson, Emilio Machín, which includes an official notification from Costas to the Council announcing that it was going to undertake the aforementioned action.
“Governing is not about putting out fires when everything has already burned down, but unfortunately in Yaiza we have been seeing a municipal government of UPY for too long that always arrives late. Not only did they not protect an emblematic element for El Golfo, but they also tried to make residents believe that they were unaware of a decision they had been officially informed of,” states Emilio Machín, who considers it “especially serious that Óscar Noda has conveyed a misleading version of what happened to the citizens.”
Notification
According to the documentation incorporated into the file, the central government's Coastal Demarcation sent the City Council a notification in which it communicated that it was going to proceed with the demolition of the staircase due to its state of deterioration, an action officially registered in the Council. Therefore, they point out, "the statements made by the mayor are thus denied and it is proven that the City Council did have prior knowledge of the decision adopted by Costas."
Emilio Machín maintains that what happened "evidences a way of governing based on a lack of foresight and transparency." “Residents deserve to know the truth and for those in government to assume their responsibilities. A mayor cannot try to justify their inaction by saying they were unaware of a decision when the documentation shows that the City Council had been officially informed,” concludes the local secretary and municipal spokesperson for CC Yaiza.
