The Cabildo of Lanzarote, presided over by Oswaldo Betancort, presented this Thursday to the wineries of the Regulatory Council, the new edition of the Lanzarote Wine Run, which will take place on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16, and whose registrations can be made through the link winerun.trackingsport.com/events/modalidades.xhtml in any of its three modalities: 12-kilometer walk, short race with the same distance and long race of 23 kilometers.
Organized jointly by the Cabildo, through the Department of Landscape and Food Sovereignty led by the island councilor for the Environment, Samuel Martín, the Regulatory Council and the Yaiza City Council, the Lanzarote Wine Run has the main sponsorship of the Centers for Art, Culture and Tourism (CACT), directed by the councilor Ángel Vázquez, as well as the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), directed by Luis Arráez.
“Beyond a sporting event, we organize this event to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our environment and our territory, as well as to recover the landscape of a unique space in the world such as La Geria through the promotion of Lanzarote wines,” said Samuel Martín, who announced that the event also known as the ‘Wine Race’ will have the parallel development of the Wine and Viticulture Fair, which will be held in Uga on Saturday, June 15, from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and on Sunday the 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The meeting took place at the Farmer's Monument and was attended by the president of the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) Wines of Lanzarote, Jorge Rodríguez, who thanked “the commitment by entities and institutions involved in the organization of this event to give value to the protected landscape of La Geria and enhance the identity of the island's wines.”
Sustainable and solidarity event
In this sense, Samuel Martín stressed the “sustainable” nature of the event, which will also serve to promote the ‘Save La Geria’ project undertaken by the Cabildo to recover and clean up abandoned farms in this natural space; in addition to its “solidarity” contribution, as part of the proceeds will go to Non-Governmental Organizations for charitable purposes.
On the other hand, the councilor pointed out that “before, during and after its celebration, about 40 people, constituted as guardians of the territory” will ensure the cleanliness of the space through which the race runs, which, as has happened since its first edition, will reward the winner of the long race with liters of Wines Designation of Origin Lanzarote equivalent to their body weights.
As has also been customary, the Lanzarote Wine Run will also highlight the figure of the camel “whose contribution has been historically vital for the configuration of a landscape as emblematic as that of La Geria”; and will include a photography contest that will reward the three images “that best condense the essence of this natural space and this unique event,” added Samuel Martín.
