The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, will initiate a direct dialogue with the Telefónica company to address the possible removal of the telecommunications antenna installed last August in Masdache, within the protected environment of La Geria.

The decision responds to the concern expressed by the residents of the area, who have expressed their rejection of the location of this infrastructure due to its proximity to homes and spaces for children's use, as well as the impact it could have on an agricultural and cultural landscape of great value.

“As an Island Institution, we have the responsibility to listen to the citizens and to guarantee that any action in sensitive spaces such as La Geria is carried out with the utmost prudence and respect. For this reason, we will ask Telefónica to study alternatives and solutions that allow maintaining the telecommunications service without undermining the health, tranquility of families, or the conservation of the protected landscape”, Betancort emphasized.

In the same vein, the Minister of Energy, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, pointed out that this type of infrastructure must respond to criteria of sustainability and energy efficiency. “From the Cabildo, we are committed to a modern energy development model, which takes advantage of new technologies and improves the connectivity of the island, but always with the commitment to minimize its impact on the environment. La Geria is a unique enclave that demands maximum sensitivity, and any action must guarantee the compatibility between technological progress, the safety of people, and the preservation of our landscape”, he stated.

In addition, the president of the Cabildo insisted that the preservation of La Geria "is an unquestionable priority". “This enclave is a natural and cultural reference, as well as a symbol of the identity of Lanzarote. The Cabildo will be firm in the defense of this heritage and in the search for formulas that guarantee the coexistence between the infrastructures necessary for development and the safeguarding of our environment”, he added.

In this context, the Cabildo of Lanzarote emphasizes that "it will continue working proactively with the administrations, the companies, and the civil society so that any decision that affects the territory is adopted from consensus, responsibility, and the maximum respect to the protected landscape of La Geria".
