Podemos Lanzarote, Lanzarote En Pie, Izquierda Unida and Movimiento Sumar Canarias jointly express their support and solidarity with the people maintaining a protest gathering in José Ramírez Cerdá Park in Arrecife to claim the right to decent and affordable housing.

The four organizations recognize the importance of this citizen mobilization which places in the public space one of Lanzarote's main social concerns regarding the difficulties faced by a large part of the Lanzarote population in accessing housing under economic conditions appropriate to their income.

Access to housing constitutes a basic need and a guiding principle of the Constitution. However, for many people and families on the island, finding adequate housing has become a difficulty that conditions their life projects, their stability, and their possibilities of remaining in the territory where they live and work.

In this context, the signatory organizations consider it necessary to listen to those who are mobilizing and to address the demands they are raising. Citizen participation and peaceful protest are part of a democratic society and allow problems that require public responses to be conveyed to institutions.

Likewise, they consider that the position being adopted by the governing group of the Arrecife City Council regarding the right to public assembly and protest, protected by Article 21 of the Constitution, is inadmissible in a democratic society, and they demand that the harassment of a legitimate citizen mobilization that peacefully claims social rights cease.

Podemos Lanzarote, Lanzarote En Pie, Izquierda Unida Lanzarote and Movimiento Sumar Canarias agree that access to housing must occupy a priority place on the agenda of the competent administrations. Likewise, they consider it necessary to open spaces for dialogue with the mobilized people, to know their demands, and to address measures that contribute to guaranteeing the right to decent and affordable housing.

The four organizations reiterate their solidarity with those participating in this collective demand and express their respect for the citizen nature of the mobilization.

Furthermore, they wish to make special mention of the families of Valterra and Titerroy who to this day continue to await a solution regarding their housing, a situation that has been entrenched in the administrations for many years.

The defense of the right to housing is a collective responsibility that demands listening, dialogue, and institutional responses.
