The Cabildo of Lanzarote, chaired by Oswaldo Betancort, presents Basic sign language manual to break hearts, the first play by Lanzarote filmmaker Roberto Pérez Toledo, which will be staged on Saturday, September 27 at the Víctor Fernández Gopar Theater “El Salinero”. The function constitutes a tribute to his figure after his death in 2022, a few days after the premiere of the piece at the María Guerrero Theater in Madrid, under the production of the National Drama Center.
In the words of Jesús Machín Tavío, Minister of Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, “this representation is an invitation to citizens to share the memory of a Lanzarote creator who knew how to project the sensitivity of our island to the world, and that today we remember from the stage as part of our common cultural heritage.”
The play tells the story of the meeting between Lucho, a young deaf man, and Jaime, with whom he shares the discovery of love and sign language in a wintery Madrid. Between games, learning and emotions, the story advances between the tenderness and fragility of feelings, revealing the intimacy of the characters and the contradictions of their desires. A plot marked by humor, naturalness and the authenticity of its scenic language.
Premiered in January 2022, the proposal was conceived as a dialogue between audiovisual creation and theatricality, opening paths that Roberto Pérez Toledo left as a legacy. The staging in Lanzarote is proposed as an act of living memory, which reinforces the island's connection with the work of its artists and with an inclusive and diverse narrative that transcends borders.
With an approximate duration of 90 minutes and recommended for people over 14 years of age, tickets are available at a price of 10 euros through the platform culturalanzarote.sacatuentrada.es.
