Lanzarote joins the international demonstration against dog hunting

The rally, which coincides with World Greyhound Day, has been held for 15 years and will travel through 44 Spanish cities and 41 cities outside the country to advocate for the rights of dogs used in this activity

The NAC (No To Hunting) Platform fills the streets of Spanish, European, and American cities to **demand an end to hunting**. It does so once again, as it has every year for the past 15 years, coinciding with the end of the hunting season in February to **advocate for the rights of the dogs used** in this activity and the animals slaughtered in the thousands of hunting grounds across Spanish territory. The 2026 demonstration **coincides this February 1st with World Greyhound Day**, one of the most mistreated and exploited dog breeds, which suffers the worst consequences at the end of the hunting season.

In Lanzarote, the demonstration will take place on the first day of February at 11:00 AM at the Palace of Justice in Arrecife

Tens of thousands of greyhounds, along with other dogs such as Podencos or scent hounds, are abandoned at the end of the hunting season. This is an impossible figure to quantify as there are no official figures on the matter, according to the NAC Platform, which has already shown that the study ‘On the management of animal protection in Spain presented by the Ministry of Social Rights and 2030 Agenda lacked validity. "The document, financed with public funds, is not based on census or official data, but on voluntary responses to a questionnaire sent to town councils and entities," they denounced.

A situation that has been dragging on for a long time and is not resolved by the latest State Animal Welfare Law, as it excludes dogs used in hunting. For NAC, the decision to exclude these animals from the State Animal Welfare Law has generated a protection gap at the regional level as well.

“The exclusion of hunting dogs from the Animal Welfare Law was a devastating blow to their legal protection. Far from being corrected, this lack of protection is now aggravated by the new Royal Decree on Zoos of Companion Animals, which once again leaves them out, preventing the facilities where they are housed—such as kennels and dog pounds—from being subject to basic welfare, health, and administrative supervision controls.”

A decision by the Spanish Government is complemented by one from the European Commission, which, despite having a protective legislative text for all dogs, has excluded hunting dogs from this protection through amendments. "Incomprehensibly, a large number of animals have been excluded from this protection, and among them, tragically, are hunting dogs, precisely those who need it most urgently. This decision is an unacceptable setback for the cause of animal welfare," explain those from the platform.

In support of greyhounds and animals such as wild boars and wolves

The lack of protection these dogs suffer is not unique, as the NAC Platform reminds us of all the other animals that are also victims of hunting. The continuous persecution and harassment suffered by Iberian wolves will also be denounced at the march and manifesto on February 1st. The supposedly exceptional culls against this animal, the smear campaign, false accusations of attacks on livestock, and the exclusion of the Iberian wolf from the List of Wild Species under Special Protection (LESPRE) in March 2025 place the Iberian wolf in an unprecedented situation of unprotectedness.

**The same thing that happened with the wild boar**. "Our voice also descends to the valleys, where the wild boar has been turned into the new public enemy," they indicate, referring to the African swine fever crisis. "They have been massacred under the pretext of population or sanitary control and are victims of management based on blood rather than science, pursued with fury in a war they did not start," they denounce

In total, 551 entities have signed the manifesto this year, breaking the record for the number of groups supporting it. The cities where the demonstrations will take place have also been expanded, as in addition to consolidating this march in Spain, where at least 44 demonstrations will be called, they are expanding outside the country. 41 will be held abroad, ten of them in cities in the US and Mexico.

Manifesto 2026

This year's 2025 manifesto will focus on World Greyhound Day as a commemoration and symbol of the suffering that dogs used in hunting seem to represent. A poem by Paula González Carracedo, a vegan activist and communicator, will also be read at the rally.
