The PSOE of Lanzarote has expressed its support for the citizen mobilization called by the Plataforma Marea Blanca in defense of the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote and has encouraged Lanzarotean society to participate massively in the demonstration that will take place next Saturday, June 20, at 11:00 AM, from Parque Islas Canarias to the Insular Hospital.

The insular secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, has warned that "we are playing with the geriatric care model in Lanzarote" and has underlined that this mobilization "challenges the entire island, because it affects the present and future of public healthcare, the care of our elders, and the care network that Lanzarote needs."

Corujo has pointed out that the Insular Hospital represents "much more than a healthcare infrastructure." "We are talking about a center with history, with its own identity, with specialized professionals, and with an essential social function. We are talking about a geriatric care model built over decades and deeply linked to the lives of thousands of Lanzarotean families," she stated.

Corujo recalled that the Insular Hospital began its activity in October 1950, was historically a resource of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and was integrated into the Canary Islands Health Service in 2015. Since then, it has been a reference in the care of the elderly, chronic patients, and people requiring medium and long-term socio-sanitary care.

"Lanzarote has a unique trajectory in geriatric care that must be protected with rigor, with funding, and with clear political decisions. Losing the Insular Hospital, emptying it of content, or diluting its specialization would represent a historical setback for the island," Corujo stated.

The PSOE of Lanzarote has been warning in recent months about the enormous social concern generated by the lack of guarantees regarding the reopening and future of the center. Corujo has insisted that the island needs verifiable public commitments, a schedule, a defined project, financial backing, and a clear explanation of the role that the Insular Hospital will play within the public health network.

“Families need certainty. Professionals need certainty. Lanzarote needs certainty. The Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo must clearly state which services will be guaranteed, which care model will be preserved, and what investments will be committed to ensure the future of the Insular Hospital,” she stated.

The socialist insular secretary recalled that the PSOE has already warned that the lack of an express guarantee of reopening places the Insular Hospital in a situation of maximum risk. “Lanzarote society has more than enough reasons to take to the streets. Every day of uncertainty increases concern and weakens a public resource that has been essential for our island for generations,” she pointed out.

Corujo defended that the Insular Hospital must remain a public, specialized center focused on geriatric and socio-sanitary care. “We are risking the quality of care for our elders, the ability to support families, and the defense of a healthcare model that puts care at the center. We are risking how Lanzarote wants to treat those who have cared most for this land,” she added.

The PSOE of Lanzarote also wanted to recognize the work of the Marea Blanca Platform and all the individuals, professionals, and groups who have kept the defense of the Insular Hospital alive. “Citizen mobilization is being decisive in ensuring that this issue continues to occupy the place it deserves on the public agenda. The defense of public healthcare has always advanced thanks to an active, demanding, and committed society,” Corujo stated.

Corujo called on militants, sympathizers, healthcare professionals, social groups, families, and citizens in general to join the demonstration next Saturday.

“The Insular Hospital has cared for Lanzarote for decades. Defending it is defending public healthcare, the dignity of our elders, and this island’s right to have quality public care,” she concluded.
