The PSOE of Lanzarote will hold this Wednesday, March 11, at 7:00 p.m., in the El Fondeadero hall in Puerto del Carmen, a conference dedicated to democratic memory and the resistance of Spanish society against ETA terrorism, in which the role played by politics, institutions, and journalism in the defense of freedom and coexistence will be addressed.

The meeting will bring together prominent speakers from the political and journalistic fields who will reflect on different aspects related to democratic memory and the recognition of those who defended democratic values against violence.

The day will feature the participation of Rafaela Romero, deputy for Gipuzkoa and deputy spokesperson for Justice in the Congress of Deputies, who will offer the presentation “Democratic resistance against ETA: they lost their rights, they gave us freedom. Women and men who resisted ETA so that we could all live in peace”, focused on the transcendence of the role of politics in the end of the terrorist organization.

Also participating will be Raúl Díaz Marín, deputy for La Rioja and spokesperson for the Constitutional Commission on Democratic Memory matters, with the presentation “Historical Memory and Democratic Consolidation in Spain”, in which he will address political responsibility in the construction of a dignified democratic memory and the recognition of the victims of Francoism.

For his part, the journalist Gorka Landaburu, a direct victim of terrorist violence, will offer the presentation “The role of the media in the construction of a dignified memory in Spain”, in which he will analyze the responsibility of journalism and the role of the media in the respectful and restorative treatment of victims of political violence.

The day will conclude with a round table with the speakers moderated by María Dolores Corujo, general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in the Congress of Deputies.

Corujo has pointed out that this meeting “will allow reflection on the importance of preserving democratic memory and of recognizing those who defended freedom against terrorism and violence”.

In this regard, he/she has highlighted that “the democracy we enjoy today is the fruit of the commitment and bravery of many people who, from politics, civil society or journalism, defended coexistence even in the most difficult moments”.

The general secretary of the Lanzarote socialists has invited citizens to participate in this day, which seeks to generate a space for collective reflection on democratic memory and the importance of continuing to defend the values of freedom, justice, and coexistence.
