Lanzarote and Timanfaya Geopark commemorate the 200th anniversary of the eruptions of Tao, Chinero and Tinguatón

The scientific-technical meeting aims to help promote reflection and the exchange of knowledge about improving strategies for mitigating risk in island territories exposed to active volcanism.

The III Conference Mitigating Volcanic Risk, international experiences for mitigating volcanic risk in island territories. 1824 Eruption, will open, on November 23 and 24, the commemorative program of the second centenary of the eruptions of Tao, Nuevo del Fuego (Chinero) and Tinguatón, in what constituted the last episode of volcanism in Lanzarote to date.

The training and cultural proposal has been jointly organized by the Cabildo de Lanzarote through the UNESCO Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago Global Geopark and the Timanfaya National Park, which also celebrates its 50th anniversary on these dates.

The scientific-technical meeting aims to help promote reflection and the exchange of knowledge about improving strategies for mitigating risk in island territories exposed to active volcanism. During the sessions on Saturday, November 23, from 09:00 to 13:30, there will be several interventions by specialists in volcanic risk and territorial planning, with work experience in the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Italy.

These contributions aim to provide a broad vision of territorial management initiatives in island areas exposed to active volcanism, including emergency management, but also the territorial recovery of affected spaces through the application of territorial planning tools. Among these experiences are those associated with territorial recovery processes in the islands of Fogo (Cape Verde), Sicily (Italy) and La Palma.

The conference will conclude with a field trip to learn about some of the main characteristics of the 1824 eruption in Lanzarote. During this visit, the way in which this volcanic crisis was managed at the time will also be addressed, as well as the current keys to mitigating the impacts associated with this type of natural processes.

The activity will be developed by the Geomorphology, Landscape and Society in Volcanic Territories research group, belonging to the University of La Laguna, with the participation of professionals from the University of Cape Verde, the National Institute of Territorial Management of Cape Verde (INGT), the Etneo Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Catania (Italy) and Gesplan.  The details of the Conference can be found on the web of Geoparque Lanzarote.

Descent of the Virgin

On the other hand, the Cabildo de Lanzarote and several municipalities are collaborating with the bishopric of the Canary Islands in the organization of the third descent of the Virgen de Los Dolores in pilgrimage on November 30, as happened during the last eruptions. The procession will begin around 06:00 hours in Mancha Blanca and is expected to culminate around 17:00 hours in the Church of San Ginés, after traveling 18 kilometers. Along the way, there will be stops in the municipalities of Teguise and San Bartolomé, and especially before the Tao volcano, in memory of the 200 years since the beginning of magmatic activity.

In addition, the celebration of storytelling is planned in the schools of Tinajo and Teguise, the opening to the public of an exhibition and the presentation of a documentary and the annual copy of the magazine Jameo, dedicated to the eruptions of 1824.
