The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Animal Welfare Department, is moving forward with the development of a collaboration agreement with the Official College of the Veterinary Profession of Las Palmas with the aim of reinforcing and coordinating island policies for animal protection and awareness.

The Minister of Animal Welfare, Armando Santana, held a working meeting last week with part of the management team of the Veterinary College to begin establishing the foundations of this agreement, which will allow a stable framework for technical cooperation to be established between both institutions. The future agreement will facilitate the implementation of new projects and actions, with the professional advice of the veterinary community, whose experience will be put at the service of the Cabildo presided over by Oswaldo Betancort.

During the meeting, Santana emphasized "the importance of articulating a joint framework that allows for improved management of key animal welfare issues, as well as expanding the island council's capacity for action."

The Official College of the Veterinary Profession of Las Palmas highly praised the initiative of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, highlighting how unusual it is for an island institution to take a proactive role in coordinating animal welfare policies with local councils, addressing issues such as the control of dog colonies, the management of cat colonies, adoption campaigns, or public awareness initiatives.

This collaborative process originated at the I Congress of Veterinarians and Veterinary Assistants (ATVs) of Lanzarote, organized by the Cabildo a few months ago with the aim of promoting continuous training, the exchange of experiences, and the strengthening of the veterinary sector. That meeting addressed clinical aspects, animal management, technological innovation, and the management of feline colonies, and served as a starting point for strengthening institutional cooperation.
