The Cabildo and the Arrecife City Council are calling for a minute of silence this Tuesday for the seven immigrants who died while trying to reach the island by boat.

Institutions and political parties express their dismay at the Playa Bastián tragedy

Institutions and political parties on the island have expressed their sorrow for the tragedy experienced this Monday in Playa Bastián, with the arrival of a boat in which seven people have died, five of them during the trip and two others when they jumped into the sea when they were near the coast of Lanzarote. The president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, has expressed "his deepest consternation" for what happened and has conveyed "in his name and in that of the Corporation his deepest condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased".

In addition, the Cabildo has announced that this Tuesday at 12 noon a minute of silence will be observed at the doors of the institution in memory of the victims. This same act will be carried out in the Arrecife City Council, which has also called for a minute of silence at the same time "as a sign of solidarity" with the deceased "and their relatives".

In the statement sent by the capital's City Council, the mayor Eva de Anta also conveys her condolences and praise from the entire Corporation to the relatives and friends of the victims.

More controls and more investment

For its part, the PSOE has also sent a note of condolences, in which the general secretary of the party on the island, Dolores Corujo, "deeply regrets" this event. In addition, she announces that public and organic socialist officials will join the minute of silence called by the Cabildo for this Tuesday.

"To the pain for the event must be added a firmer demand to the Government of Spain so that, in a coordinated manner with Morocco, controls on the coasts of North Africa are expanded and at the European level investments in development in the countries that issue irregular emigration are increased", said the socialist leader.

The Popular Party has also expressed its regret for what happened and has conveyed its condolences. "To the drama that irregular immigration entails in itself are added tragedies such as the one that occurred today and that end up cutting off the lives and illusions of people who aspire to find a better life outside their countries", says the island president of the PP, Ástrid Pérez.

"In addition, once again, we have to thank the work carried out by the Local Police of Teguise, the members of the Emergency service, the State Security Forces and Bodies as well as the lifeguard who alerted of the event", he added.

From Ciudadanos Lanzarote they express "our deepest consternation for the victims of the terrible tragedy that occurred in Playa Bastián and offer our condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased." "We will participate in the acts of solidarity with the relatives of the deceased and injured organized by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Arrecife and we call on the citizens of Lanzarote to participate and demonstrate that our island is and will be a land of solidarity".

Also Somos Lanzarote wanted to show its "regret and condolences" for the tragedy experienced on Monday morning in Playa Bastián. From Somos Lanzarote, organization that will join the minute of silence called by the Cabildo this Tuesday, they have "deeply regretted this loss" and have shown their "solidarity" with the relatives of the deceased. They also point out that it is not the first time that "human losses have to be regretted" and urge the island institutions to demand "more effective measures to avoid this type of tragedy".

The island organization also wanted to show its rejection of the mafias that traffic with human lives, as well as its gratitude to the emergency services that have intervened in the rescue of the twenty people who were traveling in the boat.

Teguise congratulates the agents and emergency personnel

Also the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, has congratulated the Local Police, the members of the Emergency service, as well as the State Security Forces and Bodies, who "despite the means they have on the island, have proceeded to attend to this new emergency situation with the greatest diligence, with professionalism and with the responsibility that is presumed in this type of emergency situations, and which they have demonstrated once again".

Likewise, Oswaldo Betancort, has especially thanked the collaboration of the lifeguards, "of vital importance in tragedies such as the one that has been experienced today in Costa Teguise, with the arrival of the boat of immigrants, some of them unfortunately deceased".

"The vigilance of the lifeguards on El Jablillo Beach, who were the first to raise the alarm, as well as the collaboration of the beach users", has allowed the occupants of the boat to be assisted as best as possible before the arrival of the agents of the Local Police, Civil Guard, Red Cross, firefighters and SUC personnel.

"In these sad circumstances, I would like to highlight and praise the professionalism and dedication of the personnel and volunteers in this new fatality that we have to regret in Canary waters", said Betancort.
