The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Healthcare Programs of the Canarian Health Service (SCS), has updated the specific protocol for healthcare to improve the health of Saharawi boys and girls who spend the summer in the Canary Islands as part of the Holidays in Peace program.

Among the specific objectives of this protocol is the review of the health status of the boys and girls who live in refugee camps and to develop preventive and health promotion activities (acquired diseases, accidents, difficulties in the socio-family environment, psychological disorders) during their stay.

Also, to confirm an adequate state of immunization of all Saharawi boys and girls welcomed into the program, according to the standards recommended by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), adapted to the epidemiological needs of their place of origin and living conditions, and to promote the social integration of the boys and girls during their stay in the archipelago.

Preventive actions

This protocol states that, during healthcare for these boys and girls, special attention should be paid to the prevention of accidents, explaining to the host families the risks of poisoning, drowning in swimming pools and the sea, falls or run-overs; and the prevention of emotional disorders, reinforcing in consultations the convenience of a calm and balanced family and social environment, and involving the entire host family in aspects concerning coexistence, avoiding situations that may lead to jealousy between sons and daughters and facilitating communication between the Saharawi minor and their family in the camps, among other aspects.

The document also refers to the lifestyle that Saharawi boys and girls should lead. Thus, respectful nutrition with their culture and religious beliefs (without pork or derivatives), varied and Mediterranean (rich in fruits and vegetables), avoiding ultra-processed foods, industrial juices, sweets and other foods rich in refined sugars will be advised.

It also highlights that it is very important to establish vacation routines such as games or outdoor activities, relationships with friends, neighbors and family.

The Holidays in Peace protocol also establishes the healthcare actions to be developed with the boys and girls in foster care within the framework of this solidarity project.

Thus, in the first visit of the SCS, the following will be carried out: an anamnesis, complete physical examination and screening tests, among other tests. The appropriate treatment will also be given for diagnosed diseases, the patient will be referred to the dental health unit corresponding to the health center and, if necessary, will be referred to the hospital care service or unit for diagnosis and treatment.
