The Canary Health Service (SCS) offers for the 2026-2027 call a total of 492 places for Specialized Health Training (FSE), according to the call published yesterday, Monday, August 10, in the Official State Gazette. This figure represents the largest in the history of the SCS, growing by 168 places compared to 2018, while compared to the 2025 call, the increase is 27 places and 5.81 percent. Thus, the Canary archipelago is above the national average, which is 3.9 percent.
The main novelty of the call is the significant reinforcement of Family and Community Medicine and Nursing, strategic specialties to guarantee the generational replacement of professionals and continue strengthening the quality of care in Primary Care.
The offer incorporates six new MIR places for this specialty, going from 92 to 98 places, which represents an increase of 6.5 percent, the largest in the entire call; and 34 for Nursing, 4 more than in the previous edition and an increase of thirteen percent. These increases respond to the +Primary Care Strategy promoted by the SCS, as well as to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, which identifies the Family and Community specialty among those with the greatest need for professionals during the next decade.
The offer for Emergency Medicine is doubled
The teaching offer, with a total of 55 specialties, also consolidates the implementation of the new specialty of Emergency Medicine, incorporated in 2025, whose training capacity is doubled, going from three to six places, with the aim of gradually increasing it in each call.
With this increase, the Canary Islands accelerate the training of specialists destined for one of the areas of care with the highest demand, progressively reinforcing the response capacity of hospital emergency services.
41 places for Mental Health and new ones in various specialties
Regarding the rest of the specialties, the teaching offer maintains the increase made in recent years to strengthen the training of specialists in Mental Health, guaranteeing the continuity of the training capacity in these specialties, with a total of 41 places, of which twelve are in Psychiatry, ten in Clinical Psychology, and seventeen in Mental Health Specialist Nursing. In addition, the global offer includes two places for specialized health training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The call also incorporates new places in various specialties, highlighting the increase in the offer in Neurology, Internal Medicine, and Clinical Neurophysiology, as well as greater use of the accredited teaching capacity in different teaching units, which allows for the optimization of available training resources and the expansion of opportunities for access to specialized training.
Lanzarote consolidates its teaching capacity
One of the most notable aspects of the 2026-2027 offer is the strengthening of Lanzarote's teaching capacity, which continues to consolidate itself as one of the main centers for specialized health training in the non-capital islands.
In total, 23 FSE places will be offered, with continued growth in recent years and reinforcing the strategy of decentralizing specialized training. The Multiprofessional Teaching Unit for Family and Community Care will offer eight places for resident internal physicians (MIR) and four places for nursing residents in this specialty.
Likewise, the Multiprofessional Teaching Unit for Geriatrics maintains the training of two MIRs in Geriatrics and 2 specialists in Geriatric Nursing, contributing to preparing professionals to respond to the progressive aging of the population. For its part, the Teaching Unit for Obstetrics and Gynecology maintains three places for Obstetrical-Gynecological Nursing (Midwifery).
In addition, the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital expands its teaching activity with places in five specialties: Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, General Surgery and Digestive System Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, and Internal Medicine.
A plan oriented towards the future of the health system
This teaching offer responds to a strategic human resources plan, aimed at training the specialists that the Canary Islands will need in the coming years.
The offer of positions is concentrated in those areas of greatest impact for the healthcare system, such as Primary Care, Emergencies and Urgent Care, Mental Health, and healthcare in the non-capital islands, guaranteeing quality training and contributing to the recruitment and retention of professional talent in our Autonomous Community.
Distribution of offered positions
The offer of Specialized Health Training for the 2026-2027 academic year is distributed among six access qualifications. The training of resident internal physicians (MIR) concentrates the largest number of positions, with 360, followed by Nursing (EIR), with 102. The call is completed with fifteen positions for Pharmacy (FIR), ten for Psychology (PIR), four for Hospital Radiophysics, and one for Biology (BIR), reaching a total of 492 positions.
