The general secretary of Coalición Canaria and president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, formalized this Friday his candidacy for the Presidency of the Canary Islands for the 2027 regional elections with the totality of possible endorsements - with the exception of his own - from the National Political Council, 98.75%, after four months touring the islands and presenting his proposal to the island organizations, the Young Nationalists of the Canary Islands, and organizations abroad.
The national organization secretary of Coalición Canaria, David Toledo, explained that the party opened the process last May 23 with a broad calendar to allow those who wished to run for candidacy to tour the islands, meet with the different organizations, and present their project. Toledo highlighted that "Fernando Clavijo has been the only person who has run in the process and has gathered 79 out of the 80 possible endorsements."
Fernando Clavijo thanked the support of the island organizations, the youth organization, and organizations abroad, as well as the work carried out during these months. The general secretary stressed that Coalición Canaria "is a party that goes from the bottom up" and defended this tour as an opportunity to take stock of the work done, listen to the membership, and address with the organizations of each island the priorities and proposals with which to face the next electoral period.
Clavijo assured that he faces this new step "with responsibility," aware of what it means to once again run for the Presidency of the Canary Islands.
The general secretary also advocated, in the face of the current climate of tension, for a way of doing politics focused on finding solutions. Clavijo stated that "what we do not want is to contribute to the fact that every time something happens, we are more concerned with blaming each other than with saying: how do we solve it."
Clavijo defended that Coalición Canaria wants to "leave the Canary Islands isolated from that tension" and advocated for the importance of this land continuing to have "a project and its own political force that defends the interests of the islands and allows for reinforcing the presence of the Canary Islands in Madrid."
Next Monday, September 28, the deadline for submitting candidacies ends. The process will culminate on October 3 in Gran Canaria, when the National Political Council, the highest body of Coalición Canaria between congresses, will vote on the candidacy for the Presidency of the Canary Islands.
