Fernando Clavijo, elected president of the Government of the Canary Islands

Fernando Clavijo was elected this Tuesday afternoon as the new president of the Government of the Canary Islands. The former mayor of La Laguna has been invested by Parliament, with a total of 36 votes in favor and 23 against during the investiture session that began this Monday. Thus, the nationalist has obtained, in addition to the votes of his party, Coalición Canaria, and those of the PSOE, by virtue of the pact sealed between both formations, the support of the 3 parliamentarians of the Agrupación Socialista Gomera.

The session began at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with the reading of the proposal of candidate for president of the Government by the first secretary of the Bureau, Mario Cabrera González. Next, the candidate spoke to present the political program of the Government that he intends to form and request the confidence of the Chamber.

The debate continued this Tuesday from 9:30 in the morning, with the participation of a spokesperson from each parliamentary group for 30 minutes. The first to speak was Asier Antona Gómez for the Popular Group; followed by Noemí Santana Perera for the Podemos Group. Subsequently, Román Rodríguez Rodríguez spoke on behalf of the Nueva Canarias Group; Casimiro Curbelo Curbelo of the Mixed Group; Patricia Hernández Gutiérrez for the Canarian Socialist Group and José Miguel Ruano León for the Canarian Nationalist Group.

The candidate replied individually to each of the parliamentary groups, whose spokespersons then spoke, and subsequently Fernando Clavijo closed the debate. The investiture session concluded after 5:30 p.m., with the public vote by roll call, in which the candidate obtained the support of the absolute majority of the Chamber.

As established by the Parliament's Regulations, the president of the Legislative Chamber, Carolina Darias, will communicate the election to the King for the consequent appointment of Clavijo as president of the Government of the Canary Islands.
