Evelia García is, as of this Tuesday, July 12, the new mayoress of the Haría Town Council, after the extraordinary plenary session held in the El Aljibe Hall.
As it had been warned this Monday, the Plenary Session has had the absence of the three councillors of the PSOE, since they considered that the acting mayor, José Torres Stinga, had convened the Plenary Session "without consensus" among all the councillors. The non-attached councillor Soraya Brito has occupied one of the opposition seats, who has abstained in the election of Evelia García as the new mayoress.
The three councillors of Coalición Canaria who have attended the plenary session, Chaxiraxi Niz, Alejandro Hernández and Víctor Robayna; and the three of the Plataforma del Municipio de Haría, José Torres, Evelia García and Fernando Fontes, have voted in favour of the election of Evelia García as the new mayoress. Armando Bonilla did not attend the plenary session.
“With this appointment, women continue to break the glass ceiling, in this specific case it is my turn, but I come to represent all the women of Haría who, for one reason or another, have not been able to reach it. I would like to be a symbol of all of them, and that is why I confess that, in holding this position, I want to be more woman and less mayoress”, the mayoress stressed.
“We are aware that there is still much to be done and, although what remains of the term is not much time, we want to make the most of it to listen to people, cover all the needs that are in our hands and bet on unity so that, between all of us, we can achieve fundamental objectives for Haría”, García said.
“We will work on a new agreement for municipal workers, on formulas of understanding with the Island Council, always thinking about the good and the future of the municipality, on a plan to save our palm grove and on a method to speed up the payment and make the scholarships more effective”, García detailed with respect to the objectives to be met during this term of office.
“In the coming months we will continue to strengthen culture, art, youth, agriculture and livestock, or care for our elders, areas especially affected after the pandemic that need our help and that have more than proven their importance in northern society. We are convinced that we will have the support of the people to demonstrate that change is a reality”, concluded the mayoress.
From Coalición Canaria they recognize that reaching this point "has not been an easy road", but they affirm that "beyond the differences and personal preferences are the interests of the people of Haría".
“We are going to continue working with this government group as we have done so far because the priority has been and continues to be our municipality and each and every one of our inhabitants. We all seek the common interest; the municipality and those who reside in it must occupy the place they deserve and that their needs and demands are taken into account”, says the local secretary of the northern nationalists, Víctor Robayna, who recalls that “there is barely a year left for the next elections and it will be they who will then have to grade our work”.
