The deputy of Coalición Canaria in Congress, Cristina Valido, has requested information from the Government of Spain about the recent launch of the African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC), established by the United States and Morocco in the town of Tan-Tan, a little more than 200 kilometers from the island of Lanzarote and a few kilometers from the border with Western Sahara.
Valido has submitted written questions to the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs after the facilities began their activity with the launch of a long-range cruise missile between August 3 and 7. This move would be part of the growing military cooperation between Washington and Rabat, whose military roadmap signed last April strengthens their strategic ties in defense industry and cybersecurity.
The nationalist party considers that, given the geographical proximity and the outermost region status of the Canary Islands, any activity of this type developed in such a close environment must be brought to the attention of the Government of the Canary Islands with sufficient advance notice. Coalición Canaria recalls in this regard that it is not the first time that Moroccan military activity in the vicinity of the Archipelago has raised doubts about the degree of information and coordination of the Government of Spain with the Canarian administrations.
In this situation, the nationalist parliamentarian asks both ministries about the information they possess regarding the launch of the aforementioned center and what has been communicated to the Government of the Canary Islands in this regard. Likewise, she asks what assessment the central Executive makes of the impact that its operation may have on the security of the Archipelago.
In case of not having sufficient information, Valido has requested from the State Government whether it plans to establish mechanisms that guarantee prior notification of this type of military tests carried out at a short distance from the State's territory. Ultimately, she also asks what contacts the central Government has had with the Kingdom of Morocco in relation to this matter.
