Workers from the Minors area of the Canary Islands Government have denounced to the Deputy of the Common, Lola Padrón, the widespread mismanagement due to the lack of personnel and the helplessness of many boys and girls derived from these deficiencies.
The Deputation of the Common informs in a statement that the representatives of the workers of the Service of Prevention and Protection to Minors of the Ministry of Social Welfare and the area of Childhood and Families of the Canarian government calculate in 12,000 the number of minors in care.
Workers feel "overwhelmed by the widespread mismanagement in situations of helplessness, referrals and foster care in all its forms due to lack of staff".
Thus, they have stressed that "each technician has to attend to up to 100 boys and girls, when ideally it would be 25 or 30 minors for each one". They have also stressed the lack of resources of the Canarian municipalities.
Each case should be studied by a specialized multidisciplinary team with professionals in psychology, social work and social education, they have raised to Lola Padrón.
There is hardly any staff or working conditions to treat the nearly 6,000 unaccompanied migrant minors on the islands, workers told the Deputy of the Common.
Lola Padrón has committed "to continue with the supervision work to ensure compliance with the law on protection of children and adolescents and to try to prevent the deterioration of the rights of minors.
