The Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands has already provided a solution for Iván Páez, the young man with a disability who stopped attending classes at the IES César Manrique, claiming that the center could not provide the care he needs. Specifically, according to the Deputy Minister of Education, María Dolores Rodríguez, a nursing assistant has been provided to the IES so that Iván can return to class.
It was a month ago when Iván's mother reported that her son was being "prevented" from attending class. "They are violating my son's right to an education," Yarely Páez said in statements to La Voz, in which she demanded that the center be provided with a nursing assistant to care for her son.
According to her, after the arrival of the pandemic, they decided that Iván should not go to the center as he was a "high-risk" patient. Thus, the young man did not return to the IES until April 12, after being vaccinated. However, then "the problems arose."
And it is that, Iván's state of health had "worsened" in that time and he has "a dressing on his side, due to a malformation he has on his back as a result of his illness, which often falls off and has to be put back on or changed for another one", and the center refused to do so.
Thus, Iván stopped attending the IES until a solution was found, which has now arrived. "It has been quite fast," the Deputy Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, María Dolores Rodríguez, highlighted on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero, alluding to the fact that it has been possible to get a nursing assistant "at the moment we are with the health issue."
Likewise, she has defended that, from Education, they have worked to "find a solution" for Iván since they had "knowledge of the issue." And it is that, although the mother stated that she had communicated her son's situation to the institute before he returned to classes, the Ministry defended that they did not know anything until he joined the center.
"Let's hope we don't have the same problem again in September"
Now, Iván's mother wanted to express her gratitude "to all the people who have contributed to providing a solution" to her son, highlighting in particular "the interest shown by the socialist deputies in the Parliament of the Canary Islands for Lanzarote, Lucía Olga Tejera and Marcos Hernández", and the media.
"In the end, Iván is very grateful to all the people who have moved so that he could go to his classes, and with all the support he has received on social networks. Going back to class has given him life and he has smiled again," he said in a statement he sent to the media.
However, Yarely Páez specifies that although at this time and for the remainder of the school year the problem has been resolved and Education has provided the César Manrique Institute with a nursing assistant who perfectly attends to Iván's needs, no one has confirmed that the solution is definitive;
"Let's hope we don't have the same problem again in September, since Education has not given me any guarantees that this person will also be hired in September. No one from Education has contacted me at any time," says Iván's mother. "I don't think they are so irresponsible as to go back to the same thing in September, but since I don't know, I'm not calm," she concludes.
