The company Industriales de Construcción de Lanzarote S.A. has requested from the Government of the Canary Islands the exploitation of a quarry for the next 21 years in Hoya de la Plata de Muñique, in El Jable, within a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). The environmental impact study of this project has been published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOP) this Thursday to submit it to public information.
Specifically, this company wants to exploit the sand from two plots of a quarry called Jablillo. These two plots have a surface area of 5,160 square meters and 5,191, making a total of 10,351 square meters.
According to the documentation presented by the company, the plots are classified in the General Plan for Urban Planning of Teguise as Rural Land for Mining Protection and included in the Insular Plan for Planning of Lanzarote (PIOL). However, the quarry is within the limits of the Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA), which includes the Northern Islets of Lanzarote and Famara.
Although these plots are in this Special Protection Area for Birds, the land in the area is urbanistically classified for mining use.
The document details that approximate reserves of 31,691 cubic meters are being evaluated and an annual production of 1,500 cubic meters is contemplated for approximately 21 years.
Now, a period of 30 days is opened for any resident, platform, or entity to examine the project and submit objections or claims if they deem it appropriate.
