The Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) issued a ruling by which it upholds the contentious-administrative appeal 169/2021 filed by the Tías City Council against the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands as the defendant and against the companies Yaizatun and Acuipalma as co-defendants.

This ruling orders the administrative file to be rolled back by which, by order of February 11, 2021, the detailed planning of the aquaculture zone called ZIA LZ-2 was approved, which specifically develops the zones in Lanzarote for possible aquaculture facilities, affecting different municipalities on the island, including Tías.

The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, states that “this ruling represents a clear endorsement of the position that the City Council has defended from the beginning in defense of our coastline, our natural resources, and the general interest of the municipality's residents”.

Cruz adds that “we have always maintained that any action of this type must be carried out with all legal, environmental, and institutional consensus guarantees, and the TSJC ruling confirms that the City Council was right to appeal this order”.

The mayor also emphasizes that “we will continue working to protect the coast of Tías and guarantee a sustainable development model compatible with Lanzarote's main economic activity, which is tourism linked to the island's environmental and landscape quality”.

The ZIA LZ-2 or Aquaculture Interest Zone in Lanzarote is planned within the Regional Plan for the Planning of Aquaculture in the Canary Islands (PROAC), approved by the Government of the Canary Islands in 2018. The Plan organizes where marine aquaculture can be developed in the archipelago and under what conditions, dividing the coastline into prohibited zones, suitable zones, and ZIA.
