Coalición Canaria commemorates this Tuesday the Day of the Canarian National Flag paying tribute “to those who fought for our autonomy”. The Canarian nationalists point to this October 22 as “an opportunity to remember those who, in the past, raised this flag as a symbol of resistance, justice and self-determination. From those who fought for our autonomy to the social movements that defended our rights”.
In an act celebrated this weekend and in which all the island organizations in Gran Canaria met and which was also attended by the national secretary of Coalición Canaria, Fernando Clavijo, and the secretary of Organization, David Toledo, the national secretary of the Jóvenes Nacionalistas de Canarias, JNC, Jesús Machín, read a manifesto in which he pointed to the flag of the eight green stars as “an emblem of unity. In every corner of the archipelago, from La Graciosa to El Hierro, we share a common history that connects us, despite the physical distance. It is a symbol that unites us in the defense of our natural resources, our sustainable economic model, our culture and our values. In each trade wind that shakes it, we find the reminder that we are stronger when we are united”.
Coalición Canaria makes a call this October 22 “to reflect on the current challenges that concern us most as Canarians. The economic situation, the migration crisis and the defense of our territory are at the center of our concerns and conversations, and it is necessary to face them firmly”.
The nationalists also emphasize that “our flag reminds us of the importance of preserving our identity and values”. Specifically, they advocate “for defending our culture, our traditions and our resources, always seeking a balance between development and sustainability” and insist that “our history has taught us that when we defend our identity and our values, we move forward as a people”.
