Coalición Canaria (CC) San Bartolomé denounces the “neglect and apathy” that the municipality's educational centers have been suffering and demands that the City Council act urgently before the start of the school year, scheduled in just a few weeks.

The Canary nationalist party considers it especially serious that, after almost two months of summer, the schools and unitary schools continue without receiving the maintenance, repairs, and refurbishment work they need.

“They have had all of the summer so far to prepare the centers and have done practically nothing. Now they intend to wait until the last week, in a rush, to paint and fix what they have neglected for months,” denounces the spokesperson for Coalición Canaria in San Bartolomé, David Rocío.

CC San Bartolomé recalls that this situation is not isolated, but rather responds to years of lack of planning and apathy towards the municipality's educational centers by the socialist governing group.

“It’s no longer just that the City Council has taken a year and a half to install a simple platform. It’s that, in addition, when summer arrives, which is precisely when this work should be carried out, they also do not carry out the necessary maintenance. We are talking about schools where our children study and where hundreds of people work daily,” points out Rocío.

The centers demand basic actions

Meanwhile, the educational centers continue to demand necessary actions such as the installation of shaded areas, the renovation of bathrooms, the improvement and asphalting of access roads, the repair of playgrounds, and the replacement of doors.

CC San Bartolomé also demands that the centers have cleaning staff during the morning shift, especially to guarantee adequate hygiene conditions in the bathrooms while they are used by students.

“We are talking about basic issues that directly affect the well-being, safety, and conditions in which our children attend class every day. We cannot wait for the course to begin to act hastily on needs that the centers have been communicating for some time,” points out Rocío.

The Canary nationalist formation also questions the management of the cleaning contract by the municipal government. “While the centers continue to demand improvements, this socialist government opts to extend an expired contract through the back door, resorting to an urgent report prepared just one month before the extension ended,” denounces David Rocío.

"What have they done during these two years? Haven't they had time to prepare new specifications? Haven't they had time to issue a new tender?” questions the municipal spokesperson for CC San Bartolomé in this regard.

Investments by the Canary Government and the Cabildo

Coalición Canaria also focuses on the investments that have been made in educational centers and recalls that, in cases like CEIP Playa Honda, the actions have been possible thanks to funds from other administrations.

One of the examples is the change of blinds at the center, an action financed through a grant from the Government of the Canary Islands directly to the school. An improvement that, according to CC, was not solely for aesthetic reasons, but a necessity that directly affected the students: “There were students who literally could not see the blackboard correctly due to the conditions in the classrooms. That directly affects the education and the daily lives of our children,” explains Rocío.

To this action, Coalición Canaria recalls the sum of the grant of 40,000 euros earmarked for educational centers for the installation of shaded areas by the Education department of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, an investment that has allowed CEIP Playa Honda to already move forward with the placement of these spaces to protect students from high temperatures.

Another example of the Canary Government's investment commitment in the municipality is CEIP Alexis Tejera. “We are talking about an investment of 7.5 million euros. Therefore, when the City Council repeats over and over again that the Government presided over by Fernando Clavijo or the Cabildo do not invest in San Bartolomé, the data and the actions are there to demonstrate the opposite,” adds the nationalist spokesperson.

“It is important that the neighbors know where the investments in our schools are coming from. While the City Council led by the PSOE remains with its arms crossed, the actions that have materialized in the centers have come thanks to the Government of the Canary Islands and the island council, presided over by Coalición Canaria,” emphasizes David Rocío.
