The candidate of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) for the Presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Yoné Caraballo, has set as one of the main objectives of his political project “to regain control” over the decisions that affect the present and future of Lanzarotean society.
Caraballo maintains that Lanzarote and La Graciosa are facing an increasingly evident political dilemma. Either the Cabildo governs for the social majority of the island or it continues to be conditioned by the interests of a few.
“Lanzarote does not need more governments that act as employees of the interests of the richest. It needs an insular government that defends its neighbors, its workers, its young people, its families, and those who live here 365 days a year,” he states.
The NC-BC candidate believes that for too long certain insular political leaders have acted more as “intermediaries for the interests of economic elites” than as representatives of the general interest.
“A public official cannot be there to facilitate that a few continue to earn while the majority pays the consequences in the form of impossible housing, saturation of public services, job insecurity, lack of land, and loss of quality of life,” he points out.
Organized people versus organized money
For Caraballo, the issue is not only which party or person occupies the Presidency of the Cabildo, but for whom one governs.
“This is the true reality. Organized people against organized money. A citizenry that wants to decide on its future versus economic interests that have been organizing for too long to defend theirs,” he maintains.
The NC-BC candidate believes that economic power has sufficient resources, structures, and capacity for influence to defend its interests and that, in the face of this, the democratic response must be an organized citizenry, aware of its strength and capable of reclaiming public institutions for the benefit of the general interest.
Caraballo thus claims a policy that does not pit citizens against economic activity, but rather puts the economy at the service of society and establishes limits when certain private interests conflict with the general interest.
