The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the town councils of Arrecife and Haría have observed a silence for the people who died in the floods caused by the DANA.
The councilors of the Cabildo have shared the feeling of widespread grief after learning of a provisional balance of 70 deaths in the province of Valencia, as a result of the floods caused by the intense rains.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, within the framework of the second day of the plenary session on the State of the Island, has shown his empathy with the inhabitants of the Spanish autonomous communities that are suffering the devastating effects of the DANA, especially in Valencia, where more than fifty deaths have already been recorded and there are dozens of missing people. “As president of the Cabildo, representing the Corporation, and I am sure that echoing the feelings of the people of Lanzarote, we have to regret this misfortune and express our condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the last few hours.”
Oswaldo Betancort has also expressed his wish that the impact of this impressive cold drop, the worst in decades in Valencia, will cause the lowest possible number of fatalities. “Likewise, on behalf of the population of Lanzarote and Graciosa, I want to convey a message of support to the UME, Civil Protection, Firefighters and other police and security forces who are carrying out intense relief work in the affected areas at this time,” concluded the island president.
Minute of silence in the Arrecife Town Hall
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, presided over this moment of silence in front of the doors of the Town Hall. Moments before, the plenary session for the month of October had concluded, where the mayor informed the spokespersons of the political groups that a minute of silence would be observed, together with all the municipalities and public institutions of Spain, by agreement of the FEMP.
At 11 a.m. - noon in the Peninsula - the mayor, together with all the spokespersons of the political groups, and the Municipal Corporation, together with municipal workers, and citizens of the capital of Lanzarote, participated in the main door of the Town Hall in this moment where a minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims.
Yonathan de León has detailed that “the intensity of the DANA and the heavy rains have affected Valencia and other areas of the Peninsula in recent hours, and we feel as our own the loss of human lives in this tragedy.
For now, there are already 62 people dead in Valencia and one in Castilla-La Mancha. There are areas whose situation is unknown, since they cannot be accessed and communication with the towns damaged by the force of the rain had not been established.
“From Arrecife we express our condolences to the families of the victims and the solidarity of the people of Conejero to all those affected. Today and always we are with our brothers who are experiencing anguish in the Peninsula due to the tragedy caused by this Dana,” declared the first mayor Yonathan de León.
Haría City Council
The Haría City Council, in response to the call from the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), has joined the minute of silence in memory of the deceased and in support of the families affected by the DANA, which has caused serious damage in the province of Albacete and in the Valencian Community.
The Haría community thus joins with a gesture of solidarity with those who have suffered the consequences of this storm and hopes for the prompt location of the missing people.
From the Consistory, a message of support and solidarity is conveyed to all those affected in these difficult times, as well as thanking all the emergency personnel who collaborate in the attention to this emergency.
