The socialist deputies for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz, Alicia Pérez, Marcos Hernández, and Lucía Olga Tejera, have denounced the treatment that, in their opinion, Lanzarote receives from CC and PP in the project for the General Budgets of the Canary Islands for 2027, registered in the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
The socialist deputies consider that accounts that the Canary Islands Government has described as record-breaking, reaching 13,209 million euros, once again relegate Lanzarote in the distribution of real investments, placing it in fifth position with 90,127,682 euros.
“The Government says that we are facing the highest budgets in the history of the Canary Islands, but that growth is not translated into a balanced distribution of investments. Lanzarote is once again relegated and it is not reasonable that, being the third island in population, we have to settle for occupying the fifth position in investment," they point out.
For the deputies for Lanzarote, it is especially significant that, in a budget of these dimensions, Lanzarote is once again left behind by other islands. Thus, Fuerteventura has 110,229,269 euros and La Palma has 102,609,455 euros, which means 20.1 and 12.5 million euros more, respectively, than the investment planned for Lanzarote.
For their part, Gran Canaria concentrates 249,152,682 euros and Tenerife 261,678,120 euros. La Gomera has 74,593,022 euros, El Hierro has 44,551,047 euros, and La Graciosa has 1,878,239 euros.
As they explain, if the real investments planned for Lanzarote and La Graciosa are added together, the joint allocation for both islands reaches 92,005,921 euros. A figure that, even including the eighth island, remains below the 110.2 million planned for Fuerteventura and the 102.6 million for La Palma.
“The numbers speak for themselves"
Fuerteventura and La Palma receive more investments than Lanzarote and, if we also include La Graciosa, we still do not reach the amounts allocated to those two islands. It is a difference that deserves an explanation from the Government of the Canary Islands," they demand.
Among the main items contemplated for Lanzarote, the socialist deputies highlight the 5,109,639 euros allocated to the duplication of the LZ-40 road, the well-known road to Las Playas de Puerto del Carmen, the works for which have not yet been put out to tender.
Also included are 2,695,247 euros for the expansion of the Costa Teguise health center, an action already awarded through early processing and pending the corresponding economic allocation to move forward.
Likewise, the Budget project does not include a specific allocation for the island hospital or for the Playa Honda health center.
To these investments are added three million euros for water storage tanks, 850,000 euros for the new educational center of Costa Teguise, and 1.9 million euros for the rehabilitation of the José Ramírez Cerdá Park.
“It is important that the budgetary allocations translate into works and services for the citizens. We have actions that are still pending tender and projects that need funding to move forward. It is not enough to announce investments, they must be executed,” they point out.
Response for the CEO of Costa Teguise
For their part, the socialist deputies have valued that at least a requested economic allocation of 850,000 euros for the new CEO of Costa Teguise is included, the works for which are still pending tender, a project on which they have registered various initiatives throughout this legislature.
In this regard, Marcos Bergaz, municipal spokesperson in Teguise and La Graciosa, recalls that they already submitted an amendment to the previous budgets to include an economic allocation that would allow its tender and construction to be promoted, which was rejected by the parties supporting the Canary Islands Government.
“Last year we submitted an amendment so that the budgets would include funding for the new CEO of Costa Teguise and it was not considered. Therefore, we value that this year an allocation of 850,000 euros is included, although now the important thing is that progress is made and the works are tendered,” explains the socialist deputy.
The deputies announce that the Socialist Group will work to amend the budget project during its parliamentary processing, with the aim of correcting an investment distribution that they consider detrimental to Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
“We are not going to accept accounts that relegate Lanzarote to fifth place in real investments. We are going to study the project and present the necessary amendments to improve the allocations for our islands, incorporate the investments that are still pending, and demand that the Government of the Canary Islands address the needs of Lanzarote and La Graciosa,” they state.
The socialist deputies demand that the growth of the regional budgets also translate into more investments for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and that both islands receive the attention they need in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and water supply.
