Betancort regrets the death of at least four people in the shipwreck of a zodiac near Lanzarote

On behalf of the Island Corporation, and on his own behalf, Oswaldo Betancort has expressed his regret for the deaths of four people last night in their attempt to reach the islands through the dangerous Canary route.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, on behalf of the Corporation, and on his own, has deeply regretted the death of, at least, four people in the shipwreck of a boat that was rescued during the night of last Wednesday after sinking in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, five people remain missing and a total of 46 were rescued.

“From the Cabildo of Lanzarote we want to express our regret, convey our public condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives; and we also want to communicate our concern that a tragedy like this has been repeated, once again, in nearby waters and starring people who are only looking for a better future”, lamented the president.

Oswaldo Betancort has been in permanent contact for hours with the island services of the Security and Emergency Consortium, to learn firsthand about the situation of the "more than 350 migrants rescued in the last hours aboard a total of six boats, all of them being transferred to the island by the crews of Maritime Rescue".

The Cabildo of Lanzarote is coordinating this Thursday with humanitarian and security teams to guarantee the reception of the 352 migrants - including minors - who have been rescued in the last hours and assisted by humanitarian teams. Aboard the four boats initially located by Maritime Rescue, 228 migrants were traveling; and in another two intercepted this Thursday, 124 immigrants were traveling, according to provisional data.
