The Lanzarote Water Consortium has begun the comprehensive renovation works of the supply network on Arrecife street and part of César Manrique street, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, an action aimed at reducing water losses, preventing breakdowns, and improving efficiency and reliability of the supply in this area.

The works have an award budget of 56,197.19 euros, financed with the Water Consortium's own funds, and are being executed by the UTE Redes Lanzarote y La Graciosa. The contractual execution period is two months, although the development of the works will be conditioned by the progress of the urban intervention being carried out by the San Bartolomé City Council in the same area.

The project includes the renovation of the network on Arrecife street, from the intersection with Juan Ramón Jiménez street to its end, and continues along a section of César Manrique street, from the roundabout of Cervantes street to beyond the intersection with José María Gil street.

In total, approximately 350 meters of new 90-millimeter diameter PVC-O piping will be installed, and connections, valves, joints, and other network elements will be renewed. The action will allow for the replacement of obsolete infrastructure, reduction of water losses, and decrease in breakdowns and maintenance costs associated with the current pipelines.

The Minister of Water of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas, explains that the need to coordinate both actions precisely caused the start of the Consortium's works to be delayed compared to initial forecasts.

“We have to coordinate with the works that the City Council is developing because it would make no sense to intervene twice on the same street. Our goal is to take advantage of the municipal works to renew the supply network and minimize inconvenience to residents,” says Cejas.

The minister adds that “the timeframe for our action is set at two months, but it will also depend on the duration and progress of the City Council's works to avoid duplicating the impact on residents. That is why we will advance according to the work they are doing, coordinating both actions.”

The Consortium's intervention is carried out in coordination with the urban intervention project that the San Bartolomé City Council is developing in Arrecife street and the surroundings of the Casa Ajei. This municipal action involves a renovation of the urban space and includes improvements in accessibility, pedestrian mobility, paving, security, and infrastructure, in addition to enhancing the value of the Casa Ajei environment. The work also has funding from the Cabildo de Lanzarote.

A new action to reduce water losses

The renovation of the San Bartolomé network is included in the Framework Agreement promoted under the umbrella of the water emergency to accelerate the improvement of the hydraulic infrastructures of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The program includes a global investment of 5 million euros: 3 million for the renovation, expansion, and improvement of the supply and sanitation networks and another 2 million for cleaning and conditioning actions of the Public Hydraulic Domain channels. Through this instrument, different pipeline renovations and actions in channels and ravines on the island have already been promoted.

Domingo Cejas highlights that “we are acting progressively on the networks because increasing water production is as important as ensuring that water reaches users. Every pipe we renovate means reducing losses, avoiding breakdowns, and improving the guarantee of supply.”

The coordination between both actions will allow for the same intervention on the public road to be utilized, avoid duplication of work, and minimize inconvenience to residents, businesses, and users in the area.
