The president of the Popular Party of Lanzarote, Astrid Pérez, has expressed her solidarity with the autonomous city of Ceuta in the face of the serious migratory crisis it is experiencing these days and has called on the Government of Spain for an "immediate, coordinated, and effective" response to a situation that, she assures, "once again demonstrates the failure of the migratory policy of Pedro Sánchez's Executive." The massive entry of migrants into Ceuta has caused an unprecedented emergency situation and has left dozens of fatalities in the attempt to reach Spanish territory.
Pérez recalled that the Canary Islands have been enduring constant migratory pressure for years, being located on one of the most dangerous migratory routes in the world, which is why "we know well the human and logistical dimension of this phenomenon, as we have been seeing boats arrive on our coasts for years and witnessing tragedies that should never be normalized. That is why we understand the suffering that Ceuta is experiencing and we convey all our support to its citizens."
The popular leader insisted that irregular immigration must be addressed through a State policy and with greater involvement from the European Union, reinforcing the control of external borders, cooperation with countries of origin and transit, and providing more resources to the State Security Forces and Corps, while guaranteeing dignified humanitarian attention for the people who arrive.
The president concluded by pointing out that what happened in Ceuta should serve to open a serious debate on immigration management in Spain, because "what is happening today in Ceuta is a reminder of a reality that the Canary Islands have been enduring on the front line for too long."
