The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, received this Thursday the president of the European Network to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion of the Canary Islands (EAPN Canarias), Esther Gálvez, and the vice-president of the entity, Fernando Rodríguez, who presented her with the report “The State of Poverty 2026”, a document that analyzes the situation of poverty and social exclusion in the archipelago.

During the meeting, the evolution of poverty indicators in the Canary Islands was discussed, as well as the main challenges to consolidate the downward trend recorded in recent years. Among the issues that require priority attention, the report focuses on child poverty and the situation of the most vulnerable people and families.

Astrid Pérez highlighted the need to maintain the involvement of institutions to move towards a society with less social inequality. "Although the evolution in recent years points in a favorable direction, we cannot let our guard down. Child poverty and the situation of the most vulnerable people oblige us to continue working from the institutions, in collaboration with social entities, so that the recovery reaches those who need it most," she pointed out.

The president of the Parliament also underlined the value of this type of report for understanding the social reality of the Canary Islands, identifying the needs of the population, and orienting public policies towards the reduction of inequalities.

For her part, the president of EAPN Canarias, Esther Gálvez, highlighted the importance of continuing the progress made and reinforcing measures aimed at people facing greater difficulties. "The positive evolution in recent years is a sign that progress can be made, but the challenge remains enormous, especially when we talk about child poverty and people in vulnerable situations. We need to maintain our efforts and strengthen collaboration so that this downward trend is consolidated and translates into a real improvement in living conditions," she stated.

The objective set is to maintain this evolution and move towards reducing poverty by half its current level by 2030, for which cooperation between public administrations, social organizations, and society as a whole is fundamental.
