The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, presented this Friday a new installment of the institutional videopodcast Open Parliament. This time it focuses on one of the most pressing problems for the archipelago: the management and scarcity of water in the archipelago.

With an informative and plural approach, this space aims to open the Parliament to society, promoting public debate around the issues that most concern citizens, "we are talking about a historical problem in the Canary Islands that today reaches critical levels," said Astrid Pérez.

Carlos Enrique Acevedo Ríos, Secretary of the Insular Chamber of Waters of Tenerife, Eduardo Padrón, Mining Engineer with experience in the public and private sectors, Javier Davara, Manager of the Insular Water Council of Tenerife and Miguel Martín, President of the Association of Farmers and Ranchers of La Palma (ASPA) participated in the debate.

In the videopodcast the experts analyzed key issues such as the reduction of rainfall, the overexploitation of aquifers or possible technological solutions such as desalination. Likewise, urgent proposals are being considered to protect the agricultural sector, whose crops are at risk due to the lack of water resources.

Astrid Pérez concluded that "the situation is complicated and requires vision, dialogue and political and technical commitment to ensure supply and protect our economic and social development."
The second installment of the videopodcast The challenges of water, which will be broadcast on August 18, will feature representatives of the parliamentary groups.
