The plenary session of the Arrecife City Council approved this Friday, unanimously by all political forces, to urge Costas to grant the definitive concession of the Theme Park land, next to El Reducto beach. The City Council recalls that "it is a surface gained from the sea whose concession was lost in 2018, during a PSOE mandate, due to non-renewal within the deadline".
The plenary agreement of November 28th supports the management of the current governing group headed by Mayor Yonathan de León, which seeks to recover the ownership of these lands through an administrative concession. In January, the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands published the opening of the public information process regarding the application for occupation of the public maritime-terrestrial domain to undertake the comprehensive reform of the Theme Park.
A large green lung next to the future auditorium
The mayor celebrated that Arrecife is closer to recovering this strategic space to turn it into a large green and sports lung, integrated with the future auditorium—which already has a technical project—whose investment is close to 10 million euros. Both the mayor and the councilor for Tourism, Commerce, and Sports, Eli Merino, are committed to a complete renovation of the park, with more sports facilities, leisure areas, and ample shaded areas, highly demanded by citizens. The initiative aligns with the municipal renaturalization strategy that makes Arrecife a pilot municipality in the Canary Islands.
The failure to renew the concession in previous stages prevented intervention in these lands for years. Currently, with the Coastal competencies already transferred to the Autonomous Community, the City Council appreciates the collaboration of the Canary Executive and the Directorate General of Coasts, whose support will allow progress on one of the most relevant projects of the mandate in terms of investment and impact on residents. In this same area, the City Council already ceded a plot for the construction of the Arrecife City Congress and Culture Palace, which has a project and initial budget allocation
New sports facilities and leisure areas
The modernization of the Theme Park includes numerous renovated spaces. Among them:
-
Arrecife's largest calisthenics park, covering 935 m², ready for safe outdoor sports practice.
-
An outdoor cinema space, covering 1,126 m², for cultural and family activities.
-
Children's sports area of 1,042 m², with multi-sport courts.
-
New 2,200 m² skatepark, equipped with new features and a U wallride.
-
Walkable fountain of 955 m², with jets to cool off on hot days.
-
Picnic area of 930 m², with furniture and ample shaded areas.
-
Pump Track circuit, which will run through the park and connect its different areas for cyclists, skaters, and pedestrians.
The mayor emphasizes that this project, along with the transformation of the green and sports area of Maneje, will allow the capital to have more accessible, tree-lined parks also designed for pets
Renaturalization and climate adaptation
The recovery of the Theme Park is integrated into the municipal plan to increase green spaces and improve urban resilience against heatwaves. To this end, Arrecife is working with the Urban and Territorial Ecology Foundation (FEUT), led by urban planner Salvador Rueda, an international benchmark in sustainable planning. The municipality is part of a pilot plan promoted with the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Canary Islands Government, which seeks to increase shaded areas, bike lanes, and recreational spaces, thereby improving citizens' quality of life.
