The Arrecife City Council, through the Department of the Elderly led by Rosmen Quevedo, joins the state campaign Being Older, promoted by the State Confederation of Active Seniors (Confemac) on the occasion of the celebration this Wednesday, October 1, of the International Day of Older Persons.

With the adhesion to this campaign, "we want to contribute to recognizing and valuing the role of older people as essential references in our society," says Rosmen Quevedo, who last June signed an agreement with representatives of Confemac, "thus reaffirming the commitment of the Arrecife Senior Area to the defense and enhancement of this group."

Being Older invites in a video to observe with a new perspective the importance of older people in daily life. Through simple and recognizable scenes, it is conveyed that the extraordinary can be found in the everyday, emphasizing that older people are irreplaceable protagonists of our day to day.

Combat stereotypes

Rosmen Quevedo encourages the citizens of Arrecife to "get involved in this campaign" with which Confemac intends to combat the negative stereotypes associated with old age, claiming this vital stage as a time of opportunities, growth and new beginnings. According to official data, in Spain there are more than 9.9 million people aged 65 or over, which represents 21% of the population.

"Far from being a burden, older people sustain a large part of social and economic life: they take care of family members, actively participate in associations, volunteer and transmit essential values to new generations," says Confemac. In this context, the 'Being Older' campaign defends a different story, which breaks with limiting visions and bets on an old age lived with dignity, participation and good treatment.
