The Arrecife City Council has drawn up a report and proposed a sanction against three food service establishments in the Charco de San Ginés area for the repeated dumping of waste on public roads, in violation of the Ordinance on Cleaning and Sustainability of the capital of Lanzarote.
The action was initiated following numerous neighborhood complaints received regarding the continuous deposit of waste outside of containers by several food service establishments in the area, as reported by the council.
In response to this situation, the Department of Cleaning, headed by Jacobo Lemes, participated in the coordination of a surveillance operation to identify those responsible for these practices.
Garbage bags on the sidewalk
During the day this past Wednesday, officers remained for several hours on Pérez Galdós street, where they were able to directly observe workers from different establishments depositing large garbage bags on the sidewalk, without placing them in the container, which was empty at the time.
The waste, due to its volume, ended up obstructing pedestrian passage on the sidewalk, causing inconvenience and affecting the normal use of public space.
No waste contract
Once the facts were verified, the origin of the waste was checked and the managers of the establishments were contacted. Likewise, it was confirmed that these businesses lacked the mandatory waste management contract associated with their activity and that they had already been warned on numerous occasions about the need for proper waste management.
The Councilor for Cleaning, Jacobo Lemes, stated that "the cleanliness of Arrecife is a shared responsibility, and economic activities must also comply with the obligations established by the regulations." In this regard, he warned that "it cannot be allowed for waste generated by an establishment to end up occupying the sidewalk and hindering pedestrian passage."
Lemes also emphasized that these types of surveillance operations will continue to be carried out in areas where repeated violations are detected or neighborhood complaints are received, with the aim of correcting these behaviors and ensuring compliance with the Ordinance on Cleaning and Sustainability.
The new ordinance establishes an updated framework for waste management in Arrecife and reinforces the need to move towards a cleaner and more sustainable city, in which the administration, citizens, and economic activities share the responsibility of caring for public spaces.
