The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, announced this Sunday, August 30, that he will forward to his legal services the comments published on a social network against his wife and his family, so that the adoption of possible legal actions in defense of the honor and privacy of the affected persons can be assessed.
De León made the announcement public through a message published on his Facebook profile, after bringing to light several screenshots of comments directed against his wife on an open social network.
As La Voz de Lanzarote has learned, the author of the messages has already been identified. Furthermore, comments and references to the mayor's family environment have been occurring for months, as this newspaper has been able to confirm.
“Everything has a limit”
Under the title "Everything has a limit," De León draws a clear distinction between the criticism he may receive for his political activity and the comments directed against his family.
"Whoever holds public office is exposed to criticism. I know it, I accept it, and I respect it, even if it is harsh," says the mayor.
However, he emphasizes that his wife and his family do not hold any public office and that he is not willing to have them used as a way to attack him.
"My wife and my family do not hold any public office and I am not going to accept that they be used to attack me, much less through insults, disqualifications or insinuations about our private life," he states.
"This person has decided to publish this comment on an open social network. The comment is duly documented and will be forwarded to my legal services so that they can assess the corresponding legal actions in defense of the honor and privacy of the affected persons," he points out.
De León: “Attacking my wife crosses a line”
The mayor defends that criticism of his management is part of democratic debate and that he is willing to accept it, even when it is harsh. "They can question me as mayor, criticize my decisions and disagree with my way of managing. That is part of democracy," he points out.
But he considers that the situation changes when the comments are directed against his family environment. "But attacking my wife to try to hurt me crosses a line that I am not willing to allow,” he maintains.
De León ends his message with an express claim for respect for his family: "Respect always. But respect for my family too."
The screenshots released by the mayor show some of the comments published by the user, with direct references to his wife and allusions to issues related to her private life.
Among the messages are expressions of a derogatory nature and insinuations about her relationship with the mayor, as well as references to De León's attendance at a concert.
The comments that the mayor has now made public would not be an isolated incident. As La Voz de Lanzarote has been able to confirm, this type of message has been occurring for months and the citizen responsible for the publications has already been identified.
De León has now opted to place the matter in the hands of his legal services, who will have to determine if the messages could lead to any type of legal action.
