The Arrecife City Council will incorporate four new large-capacity electric buses next February as part of the modernization process of the municipal urban transport service. These are 100% electric vehicles, put out to tender during the current term, which are part of the plan promoted by the municipal government, chaired by Mayor Yonathan de León, to provide the capital of Lanzarote with a more modern, agile, and sustainable transport system.

The new buses have a capacity of 75 passengers each, including seated and standing spots. "Their incorporation represents a milestone for the municipality and will allow for a significant improvement in service, with the creation of new routes, shorter journeys, and a reduction in waiting times at stops," according to the city council.

The mayor of Arrecife and the councilor for the area, accompanied by municipal technicians, visited the facilities of the awarded company on the mainland last week to supervise the final details of the vehicles before their transfer to the island. Two more units will be added to this acquisition at the end of 2026.

With this addition, Arrecife will have a fleet of eight large electric buses —all acquired during this term— in addition to three minibuses, also electric. The City Council has allocated more than five million euros to the modernization of the Urban Bus service, an investment that includes the purchase of vehicles, the adaptation of the municipal depot, and the installation of electric charging points.

Yonathan de León emphasized that in 2026 citizens "will witness the great change in Arrecife's urban transport," with a modern fleet unique in the Canary Islands, which is committed to sustainability and offers a real alternative to the use of private vehicles for travel between neighborhoods and the city center.

The mayor also highlighted that this action represents "a great leap in electric mobility" in a municipality that concentrates more than 43% of Lanzarote's population, contributing to the advancement of a sustainable mobility model for the entire island. For his part, councilman Mario González Altube recalled that these are the **first 100% electric large buses** to enter service in Arrecife, adding to the two units launched in December 2024, as well as another two recently put out to tender. "The progressive expansion of the fleet will allow for increased frequencies, extended operating hours, and reduced user waiting times," he notedThe arrival of the four buses is scheduled for the first days of February, after their disembarkation at the port of Los Mármoles, and their service will begin a few days later

The new vehicles incorporate state-of-the-art technology and equipment, which will be officially presented in Arrecife in the coming weeks. The City Council plans to continue investing in the 2026 and 2027 budgets to consolidate a more efficient, modern urban transport service aligned with Arrecife's transformation projects as the capital of Lanzarote.
