The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, continues to reinforce surveillance and security in the city with the planning of the increase of personnel, and the acquisition of new vehicles to strengthen the police presence in the neighborhoods during the 24 hours of the day.

The increase in the staff of the Local Police is contemplated in the recent Public Employment Offer, approved this past summer, and now focuses on providing more means and vehicles to the Police Force.

The Arrecife City Council has published in the Public Sector Contracting Platform the tender for the acquisition of three patrol vehicles, a police pick up, a van for interventions and three police motorcycles, with an investment of approximately half a million euros. This new tender, for the expansion of the police fleet, is distributed in four lots and has a deadline for the presentation of economic and technical offers until October 6.

Yonathan de León has detailed that, after this tender, and according to the administrative specifications, the companies have a period of up to 5 months for the delivery of these new units of vehicles and police motorcycles. The premiere of this new fleet is scheduled for the end of next spring 2026.

It will be scored in this official tender that the supplying companies promote the employment of people with particular difficulties of insertion in the labor market.

Arrecife adds this new phase of modernization to the one launched in these two years ago where it turns the capital of Lanzarote into one of the municipalities with the largest police fleet for a capital of a peripheral island in both archipelagos, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. Several of the vehicles that the Arrecife Local Police force has premiered are camouflaged, which is allowing an efficiency in the follow-ups and surveillance in certain sensitive areas of Arrecife where the population exceeds 72,000 residents.

From rental cars and the most modern fleet

The mayor of Arrecife recalled that "until a few years ago the Local Police was news because the agents were patrolling in rental cars, having an unusable fleet, and now it is among the police forces of the Canary Islands with the greatest modernization of technological means, police vehicles, central with video cameras, and police coordination with other Security Forces".

This has allowed the city of Arrecife to significantly reduce crime rates, with the reduction of crimes linked to drugs, thefts and robberies with force. "During this past semester Arrecife is the only municipality in Lanzarote, with data from the Ministry of the Interior, that reduces these criminal offenses", conclude from the City Council.
