The Heritage Councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, points out that "the Arrecife City Council took a year to request permits from the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea to carry out the restoration of the Puente de las Bolas". In this sense, the councilor responds to the criticisms made by the spokesperson of the Popular Party in the Island Council, Jacobo Medina, accusing the Island Institution of "being responsible for losing the subsidy granted to undertake the actions".
González wanted to deny the “bad management” that the Popular Party alleges as the reason for the loss of funding and emphasizes that the capital Consistory “all it does is put obstacles to the rehabilitation and protection of the city's heritage”.
“When they take a year to request the necessary permits from the Coasts to launch the project, what the City Council demonstrates is a lack of attachment and concern for Arrecife and its heritage. It has been clear on numerous occasions that they are more concerned with undertaking political confrontations than with solving the problems that the citizens suffer and providing the capital with the new image it so badly needs,” the councilor highlights.
In the same vein, González assimilates this case to the “continuous changes of criteria of the City Council with respect to the actions of the Plaza de Las Palmas”.
Finally, the councilor concludes that the Popular Party “sees heritage as a burden and puts all its means at the service of destruction and loss of the cultural and heritage values of Arrecife”.
