The Island Committee of the PSOE of Lanzarote, the organization's highest body between congresses, has unanimously approved the management of the Island Executive Committee in a session in which the main political and social challenges facing the island were also addressed.

During her speech, the island secretary and congresswoman, María Dolores Corujo, stressed that this body not only serves to render accounts, but also to “share a collective reflection on the political moment we are experiencing, the work done and everything we still have ahead of us.”

Corujo highlighted that these have been “intense” months, in which the PSOE of Lanzarote has shown to be “where it had to be: by the side of the people”, citing as an example the defense of the Insular Hospital. “We have said it clearly: it is not a transfer, it is a real risk of dismantling a healthcare model that is part of the history and dignity of this island. They want to get rid of the only geriatric hospital in the Canary Islands”, he affirmed.

In this sense, he highlighted the work of the party in all institutions, “giving voice to professionals, patients and families”, and defending “a way of understanding the public”.

The island secretary was also forceful about the management of the integral water cycle in Lanzarote, denouncing that the current situation “is not the result of chance, but of a way of governing based on lurches, improvisation and the total absence of a roadmap”. “Three different decisions have been made in less than 24 hours, while citizens pay more, receive less and continue to suffer supply cuts”, she pointed out.

Likewise, he addressed the situation of nursing homes, describing what happened as “undignified, inhumane, and morally unbearable”. Corujo assured that the PSOE has acted “with prudence, but with all the firmness demanded by the seriousness of the facts” and reiterated the commitment to “go all the way and ensure that no one ever looks the other way again”.

In a state key, he defended the action of the Government of Spain and of President Pedro Sánchez, highlighting “the pride of belonging to a political project that bets on diplomacy, dialogue and the defense of peace, placing Spain on the right side of history.”

The session of the Island Committee also served to approve various resolution proposals focused on some of the main challenges facing Lanzarote, among them initiatives on housing as a triggering factor for child poverty; the dignified treatment of elderly people in residences; the rejection of Renewable Acceleration Zones; the defense of the Island Hospital; the improvement of healthcare services and the reduction of waiting lists; the elaboration of the vocational training school map adapted to strategic sectors such as the green economy, the blue economy, and the agricultural sector; the study of the agricultural sector and the crops that may be being lost on the island; the carrying capacity; the situation of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers; and the implementation of a subject on the European Union, also urging the competent Ministry to stimulate and promote knowledge of the internationalization programs of the European Parliament and the European Commission.

Finally, Corujo wanted to thank the commitment of the socialist militancy, recalling that “without their dedication, their time and their constant work, this party would not be what it is”, and reaffirming the role of the PSOE of Lanzarote as an organization “committed, useful and at the service of the citizenry”.
