A total of 478 elderly people without a family support network, single-parent families with children in their care, homeless people, and people in situations of social exclusion are attended to through five social programs developed by the Flora Acoge Foundation in Lanzarote, to which the Ministry of Social Welfare of the Canary Islands Government allocates almost 562,000 euros, while the Lanzarote Cabildo allocates more than 316,000 euros annually. This data was announced by the Vice Minister of Social Welfare, Francisco Candil, during the visit he made this Thursday along with the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marci Acuña, to the facilities of the social entity to learn in detail the results of these social projects.
Specifically, Candil was able to personally learn about the current implementation of the program "Accompaniment to Elderly People in Solitude," through which 52 elderly people without a socio-family support network are attended to, 36 of whom are women. Through this program, accompaniment and help are offered to the elderly for managing daily life needs such as accompanying them to medical appointments, doing shopping, and banking transactions, "with the aim of helping to improve the well-being and quality of life of the elderly person and to promote and enhance their autonomy, within the framework of policies aimed at promoting active longevity for the elderly sponsored by the Ministry of Social Welfare," highlighted the Vice Minister.
In addition, Candil was able to learn firsthand about the Shelter House for homeless people, through which the needs of food, hygiene, and accommodation are met for people experiencing homelessness. "A fundamental resource to support people who find themselves without the possibility of accessing a roof, offering them a place to sleep, shower, and where they receive food support," indicated the Vice Minister, who clarified that during this year the resource has sheltered 60 people, 51 men and 6 women. Currently, the Shelter House has its 17 places occupied and there are 5 people on the waiting list.
To these two programs, we must add the 147 people attended (114 men and 33 women) through the Social Promotion Project, which provides dining and personal hygiene services to people without income, and the 188 beneficiary people (109 adults of whom 72 women and 37 men; and 79 minors) of the La Sereta Project, through which family units are attended, mostly single-parent families with minors in their care with high unemployment rates. In addition, the social entity carries out the Accompaniment and Care Project for people at risk or in a situation of social exclusion, initiated in April of this year, through which another 31 people are attended in the elderly area.
For the execution of these five programs, along with the project for the acquisition of a 9-seater vehicle, the Regional Executive's Ministry of Social Welfare has allocated a total of 561,819.61 euros this year in grants awarded within the framework of the Social Inclusion calls and charged to the tax allocation of 0.7% of Personal Income Tax (IRPF) managed by the autonomous community's department.
For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marci Acuña, highlighted that "the Flora Acoge Foundation is a key piece in the social inclusion policies that we develop on the island. It carries out an essential job with the most vulnerable people, offering real solutions through fundamental resources such as its Shelter House and the social dining hall".
Acuña recalled that the Cabildo allocates more than 316,000 euros annually to different programs developed by the entity, "an investment that reflects our commitment to dignified, stable, and quality social care". Of this amount, more than 250,000 euros are allocated to the Shelter House, a resource that has 17 places and remains open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, guaranteeing permanent support for those who need it most. In addition, the Cabildo finances the We Grow Old Together program and the project for Attention to the basic needs of people in a situation or risk of social exclusion.
Likewise, the counselor highlighted the work carried out by the entity "because it not only covers basic needs such as accommodation or food, but also accompanies each person in their inclusion process, promoting their autonomy and fostering new future opportunities".
The Flora Acoge Foundation has a team of 29 workers linked to these projects with different technical profiles in the areas of Social Work, Psychology, Technicians in prevention and social inclusion programs; therapeutic assistants; occupational therapist; education technician; home help assistant, janitor and kitchen staff, in addition to coordination and administration staff.
