Alfredo Villalba defended this Monday, during a new meeting of the Commission for Fishing, Coasts, and Insularity of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), held in Puerto del Rosario, the need to strengthen the protection of the coastline, guarantee the future of the fishing sector, and offer new opportunities to the generations who want to continue developing their activity in municipalities linked to the sea.

The mayor and president of the Commission, Alfredo Villalba, participated in this meeting along with institutional representatives and public officials, and highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen collaboration between administrations to respond to the challenges shared by coastal municipalities. “We must continue working to protect our coastline, preserve traditional activities linked to the sea, and offer real opportunities to new generations,” he pointed out.

The day addressed issues of special relevance for towns linked to the sea, including generational change in the fishing sector, planned modifications to the General Coastal Regulations, participatory local development in fishing areas, and the opportunities presented by the future European Pact for the Ocean.

The meeting also included the participation of the mayor of Puerto del Rosario and vice-president of the Commission, David de Vera; the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García; the insular councilor for the Primary Sector, Enrique Pérez; the president of the Confederation of Confraternities of the Canary Islands, Lorenzo Brito; the deputy director general of Fisheries, Manuel Pablos; and representatives of the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture Planning of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The FEMP Commission for Fishing, Coasts, and Insularity works permanently to defend the interests of coastal and island municipalities, promoting initiatives related to fishing sustainability, environmental protection, responsible coastal management, and economic development linked to the sea.

Alfredo Villalba reaffirmed during the meeting the commitment of the Haría City Council to defending the unique characteristics of coastal and island territories and to seeking solutions that guarantee the future of communities that maintain a close relationship with the sea.
